Who needs a calculator?
You don't need to scramble for a calculator if you have a Google search box nearby. Putting a mathematical equation into Google will give you the result.
Try putting the following into Google:
12*4-6
(use '*' for multiplication and '/' for divide)
Conversions are easy too:
yard in centimetres
Who needs a dictionary?
Google will provide some definitions for you:
define: first water
Thesaurus too?
Ever tried to find a bargain? You want something cheap, discounted, for sale, reduced etc.
Using the tilde (~) symbol in front of the word bargain will also return results containing such synonyms.
~bargain dresses
will return results including cheap, sale, discounted etc.
Need to specify a size?
Sometimes we can narrow a search by including a size or other number range:
Using two full stops (..) we can include a range of numbers.
size 18..22 wedding dress
Shopping for a car, but only have $5000?
1977 celica ..$5000
What was that word again?
Sometimes we need an exact phrase but can't remember that one word. Use the one word wildcard (*).
What did Lightning McQueen say in that movie?
"float like a * sting like a Beamer"
But I want the word 'the' in my search?
Ever wanted to include a word like 'the' in a search but Google kept ignoring it.
Use a plus sign before the word (+):
+the crow
Not happy with a sites search feature?
You can use Google to create your own search within a site. The following example will help find information on BAS statements from the ATO's site:
bas site:ato.gov.au
Need to narrow a search even more?
You can refine a search that is returning far too many results:
intitle:eagle
This will only return results with eagle in the title of the page.
But if you need to specify more than one word in the title:
allintitle:eagle wedge
(Using quotes, intitle:"eagle wedge", won't work)
Want PDFs only?
You can search for a certain file type:
sample homework filetype:pdf
Who needs a road map?
You might still need a road map when you are on the road and are without Internet access but if you haven't tried Google Maps lately it's well worth a try.
